Thank goodness! It worked! I ended with only 3.7 earths this time!
I believe these changes are due to the fact that I no longer drive. I ride the bus or walk everywhere. Its been time consuming but I've gotten a lot of exercise which is great! I also have been trying to buy more local and of course our electricity bill has gone down, which I hope is partly due to the fact that I've turned off various electronics and lights around the house as well as unplugging them when not in use. I am extremely pleased with the results and I hope to continue my behavior. I know I still have a lot more I can do but I think in the short time of this quarter I did a great job in reducing the number of earths I was using!

Business & Technology | Amazon.com's Kindle fails first college test | Seattle Times Newspaper
Business & Technology Amazon.com's Kindle fails first college test Seattle Times Newspaper
I would have to agree with the girl interviewed. I think it would be tough to study for exams and look things up on a Kindle vs. a textbook. This is disappointing as the Kindle and other such devices would greatly not only paper use but the energy used to produce the book and also transportation issues. I think eventually students will get used to the idea and not need a textbook but I think we're a long way from that point. Hopefully that can just continue to improve upon the technology to make it easier to study from a Kindle. I haven't yet been able to use a Kindle myself but when I use a textbook, I highlight and tab things which I'm not sure what kind of technology the Kindle's have but if I wasn't able to somehow mark and highlight things I would find it hard to use for school.

Second Life Sustainability Education
Second Life Education
I think this video shows us how we could potentially use Second Life to educate people on what sustainable living is. We could show people the benefits and maybe start to convince them to change their lifestyles. I know we wouldn't be able to reach everyone this way but if we could use this as another way to spread the word it could become an extremely powerful tool.

Furture Cities - Vegas Transit!
New Vegas Transit System
I think this idea is great! But it is interesting to wonder how the locals will take it. Of course the tourists will think its great because they are the ones that would have to pay for a taxi otherwise so of course they are going to love having the cheaper option of this transit system but if this system can capture the attention of the locals then maybe Vegas will see some improvement in their traffic!

Re-evaluation time!
1. I have been doing a great job of turning off lights around the house, unplugging things that are not being used and also turning off the power strips! Every night I have successfully made sure our porch light is not on and all the lights are turned off. Each morning before I leave I unplug all of the electronics and switch off power strips!
2. As for the bus and walking. I haven't done that great of a job with this but I will continue to try to improve as the weather will hopefully be getting nicer. With all the rain that has been around lately its been hard to accomplish this but as you may have read in my earlier blog I've been walking home from the bars instead of getting rides and or calling a taxi!
3. I have been buying a lot of organic and local products which has been great and it tastes better anyway! The expense of organic products has been a bit hard to manage but so far so good. I could do better with just cutting down eating chicken and turkey in general so I will continue to work on that.
4. And lastly for water use! I've been doing a fairly good job making sure I'm only doing laundry every so often. I decided my goal was laundry day could only come around every 10-14 days instead of once a week. I've been wearing clothes I wouldn't have worn before and as the nicer weather has been approaching I've been able to take advantage of my summer wardrobe as well!
NEW!! 5. And as for a new commitment I want to make. I realized that some of my bills are still going to my permanent address where my mom lives. I don't ever look at these statements I just go online and/or call and make payments through the internet or phone. This is a complete waste of paper considering I don't even look at them. Therefore I've decided I will call the places I still have a couple of paper bills for and have them stop sending them and I'll just continue my internet and phone use!
- Another thing I was reading online was places you can send your old cell phones so I think if I have some extra time over the weekend I'll go through my stuff and find a couple of old cell phones I have and send them in! Its not like I'm doing anything with them, they're just sitting in boxes taking up space!

Honda's Dream the Impossible
Honda's Dream the Impossible
This was a really interesting video to watch. I fell upon it when surfing the internet and as I was watching I was trying to imagine for myself what 80 years from now will be like. And unlike the woman in the video that said she felt optimism when thinking about the future... I did not. Its unlikely that I will be here 80 years from now but I fear for my children and grandchildren. Unless we begin to make some changes now there's no way they are going to have much of an environment left if any... Lets pray we can make some changes!
I loved the concept that one of the guys talked about when comparing cell phones vs land lines and then talked about cars and cities. I think his idea about designing cars for the city and making it something that people would consider an obvious and easy decision just like the cell phone. Hopefully someone can design such a vehicle... but we shall see!

In addition to DeShawn's blog!
So I'd just like to feed off of DeShawn's blog about walking home from the bars... yes I was with him and it was quite the adventure but he's right! We all laugh at this but it was just another step in the direction of a sustainable lifestyle. We could have taken a cab, called for a ride, or even taken a shuttle but we chose to walk and even though it may have been a small thing I'd like to think that if we were to continue to do this especially during the summer months taking advantage of the nice weather I think we could start making a difference! :)
